This Zoom meeting for Docents is held on the first Monday of every month at 4:15. We will start with "tour stories" where docents can share interesting moments from recent tours, then spend about 20 minutes discussing a museum content-related topic, and end the meeting by planning ahead for the next month's tours.

Appalachian History Class 

We need a volunteer to lead the Banjo Bingo and History of Listening & Science of Sound Lesson

10 students, 10th-12th grade, 1 teacher

*Volunteer shift includes set up and take down of the program as well as one hour of programing.

This is a self-guided tour. The assistant's role is to be a gallery assistant who is available to help the group with whatever they need so the Gallery Assistant can remain available to engage with our general visitors.

Lunch Coverage for the Frontline. Must be Disaster Trained and Register training is preferred.

Expectations:

Call time is at 5:45, with a Pre-Show meeting at 6:00. In the pre-Show meeting, we will cover which Staff Members are in charge, if there will be a Meet and Greet, if there are any ADA needs, and any other information you may need for that evening's event.

Interact with guests as they wait for the doors to open. 

Dress Code: Special Event “uniform”.

Ensure the theater stairs are clear of any obstructions (guests or personal belongings).

Ushers should ensure ticketed guests find a seat, and make sure that the doors are always closed quietly.

Ensure guests stay free of the Stage area at all times.

You may enjoy the show between duties, but please watch from the wings and be prepared to help guests or performers enter and exit quietly as needed. 

Things to note:

Four volunteers are required for this event to run smoothly. These spots are first come, first served. When artists are announced, we will send you an email with links to the artists and you are encouraged to listen to them if you sign up for the show. 

There is no assigned seating; all seats are first come, first served.

ADA seating - If we have any known guests who require accessible seating, those seats will be notated and reserved with the guests' names on them. 

This is a live show that is being recorded for television. Leaving the theater mid-show is discouraged to reduce light and sound interference with the performance and recording.

Roles (Location and job expectation):

Manifest: Greet guests at the Front Door; Check them off the manifest as they arrive.

Moore Street Door Usher: At the Moore Street Door, help with seating, doors, and assist the Stage Manager in helping the Artist in and out of the theatre.

Left Door: The door closest to the Green Room/Blue Stocking Learning Center; help  with seating and doors.

Floater (x2): Help as needed

Stage Assistant: Assist with stage needs

Green Room Assist: Help set up, maintain, and clean up the green room.

Museum Story Time recurring on the first Friday of each month. 

Assist instructors with setting up the room, oversee check-in and checkout of students, and assist with the non-instrument instruction-related needs of instructors, students, or parents.

Bring your favorite soup to share!

We will play White Elephant/Dirty Santa game! This game is optional. If you would like to participate, bring a bring a wrapped gift of less than $20 value. Re-gifting is approved and even encouraged. If you don’t love it, someone else might!

Families are welcome at this event.

BCMM will provide hot chocolate and a grilled cheese station to acompany the soups. 

Roots Music History: Live! is a multimedia presentation on local East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia music history presented by the producer and host of the music history podcast American Songcatcher heard on Radio Bristol, WNCW and wherever you get our podcasts, Nicholas Edward Williams. The experience includes historical audio, video, imagery, and a short concert of early songs recorded or documented in East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia.

Speaker Sessions are the museum’s lecture series, though the “lectures” often include a performance element or can be panel discussions or Q & A events. Topics are related to country music, music history, Appalachian culture and history, or the content of the current special exhibit. Monthly Speaker Series happen in the Performance Theatre; the month of September and Virtual Speaker Series do not apply. 

Two Disaster Trained Volunteers are needed to assist with each in-person Speaker Series to help.

For new volunteers who would like to do the New Volunteer Orientation. Orientation covers going over the Volunteer Handbook and a quick walk through of the museum.

Assisting the Songwriter Circle leader with anything they may need during their monthly Jam sessions. 

Assisting the ETNBA (East TN Bluegrass Association) with anything they may need during their monthly Jam sessions. 

This is for Interns to record their hours.

Shadowing, or learning by observation, is one of the best ways to train for a new role and become comfortable within the museum. Sign up for this shift when you intend to be in the museum in a learning capacity.  

Please email the Volunteer Coordinator after signing up for this flexible shift with the exact date and timeframe that you intend to shadow. Specific hours must be entered manually in order for you to receive proper credit for your time. Learning is working!
